Throughout the ages, phoenix is always associated as symbol of rebirth, peace, uniqueness, beautiful and immortality. Phoenix has always been a popular tattoo design especially in China and Japan. There are difference between eastern and western phoenix.
Western Phoenix
The Firebird on Greece and Egypt was a mythological creature that always lonely, there could only be one phoenix at a given time. When it became old (500-1000years), it would create a nest made from myrrh twigs and died in the middle of flames of nest, then a new phoenix could revive from the ashes and live for another 500(or 1000)years.
Western Phoenix Tattoos
In western countries, phoenix is the symbol of immortality and rebirth. Western phoenix looks like an eagle but it is mild and peace, normally it is gold,orange and red in color.
Eastern Phoenix Tattoos
The Chinese Phoenix is called FengHuang and it is seen as the "King of all birds". In tradition, it would only appear on times of peace and prosperity and it is the second most-respected legendary creature.(after Dragon)Therefore, FengHuang is always associated with peace, elegant, beautiful and justice. The Chinese mythical bird looks like a peacock and it is always colorful.
In Japan, the phoenix is called Fushicho, mean "Undead Bird". It has the almost same meaning with chinese phoenix.
